Two brothers with different destiny

The return of the Neophron

Katerina and Paschalis are two different brothers born in one nest of Dadia forest with few days apart. Paschalis, the first chick and the more active, started its travel to South on 8th of September. In 5 days had reached in Crete where it rested for two nights and the next day it crossed the sea covering about 400 kilometers and landed on the coast of Egypt. Today, Paschalis is anymore in Chad where it will winter as Lefkippos - the last year's juvenile Egyptian vulture from Dadia forest.
However Katerina the younger juvenile didn't do it. It left on 13th, followed similar migration route with Paschalis, but at the end it decided to follow a more difficult journey. It started its long journey from a North-Eastern part of Crete, a small island named Plakida where it roosted during the night, a route to Africa for over than 500 kilometers. In about 130 kilometers before Africa's coast could not resist and drowned in the vast sea. The younger Egyptian vulture was not as lucky as its brother.
It seems that parents may not accompany the juveniles during the migration. Last year and this year we recorded the parents next to their nests one day after their juveniles started to migrate. Thus, the juveniles risk their life due to possibly unfortunate travel routes.
