Illegal shooting is among the main factors for the decline in the numbers of the Egyptian vulture population. The conviction that all birds of prey are “harmful” survived until the 1970’s and their hunting and extermination was encouraged. Despite being a protected species, a great number of Egyptian vultures also became victims of poachers. Nowadays this globally threatened species is harmed either due to low ecological culture, or for the purpose of taxidermy; the stuffed birds are usually exported. Another problem affecting wild populations seriously is the practice to steal the eggs and chicks from the nest. The Egyptian vulture is a protected species and any aggression is punished by law.
