- A new publication on the largest congregation of Egyptian vultures in Eastern Africa
A new scientific publication of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BirdLife Bulgaria) and the Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society (BirdLife Ethiopia) on the wintering congregation of Egyptian vultures in Afar, Ethiopia (the largest known congregation of the species in Eastern Africa) was published this month in Ostrich – the journal of African ornithology.
The paper reveals some aspects of the ecology of the species in Ethiopia and the potential threats, with emphasis on systematic dog poisoning. It highlights the directions for further investigations and conservation of the species in the region, with implications for the Asian, Turkish and Balkan populations, as well.
The material was made under the frames of the CMS - Raptors MoU funded project (SSFA/CMSAD/2012/004) and LIFE+ project ‘The Retrun of the Neophron’ funded by the European Commission and ‘A. G. Leventis’ foundation.
