- The flight of the Egyptian vultures - fates and directions
From 20 only 6 survived! This is the outcome so far - between 2012 and 2014 20 Egyptian vultures were tagged with satellite transmitters, but only 6 of them continue literally to draw their path on the map that anyone can see on the site of the project “The return of the Neophron”:
Sanie - the only chick from the hatchlings tagged with satellite transmitters in 2013 that is still alive. Sanie kept close to a compact region around Lake Fitri in Chad.
Dobromir - hatched in 2012 in North Bulgaria, in just one month tour entered the Balkans from Turkey through Dardanelles, came to Moldova and now is located between Brasov and Bucharest.
Volen - hatched in 2012 in Northern Bulgaria, too, moved from Israel to the region of Ankara in a month. Volen often flew to neighboring Syria.
Lefkipos in June moved from Eastern Chad through Sudan as far as North Egypt, then returned in Sudan again, covering about 5000 km.
Iliaz took a 4500-kilometers journey in June from Niger through Chad and Libya as far as Egypt and back, crossing large areas in Sahara.
Castor – the Egyptian vulture that had been found in bad condition on the 1st of May in the North of Greece was tagged with a satellite transmitter and released back into the wild, now is located on the Bulgarian-Greek border in the area of Dadia.
Unfortunately Svetlina (Light) died on the border between Sudan and Eritrea. She spent a long time in the Afar Triangle, before moving to Djibouti and Eritrea. Soon after her entry into Sudan, she stopped moving. With her brave journeys she discovered completely new horizons in our understanding of the migration of Egyptian vultures in the Balkans.
