- Safe electricity pylons in the Eastern Rhodopes
The insulation of dangerous electricity pylons continue with new 34 insulated pylons and 27 other which are about to be insulated by EVN till the end of June in the Eastern Rhodopes and will secure the most dangerous pylons in 4 Egyptian vulture territories.
In March 2014 in Northern Bulgaria were insulated 18 new electricity pylons and initiated at the July 17, 2013 by securing 10 pylons.
The insulation of dangerous electricity pylons is important for the protection of the Egyptian vulture population in Northern Bulgaria as well as in the Rhodopes, as it reduces the risk of electrocution. The safe pylons are of great importance for the juveniles who are not experienced and the chance of electrocution is greater.
Insulation of the pylons is done by Energo-Pro and EVN under a memorandum for cooperation with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB).
In 2012 and 2013, BSPB experts mapped over 7300 electricity pylons of various types along 500 km power lines in Bulgaria. The mapped dangerous pylons fall into 14 breeding territories of Egyptian vultures within 9 Natura 2000 areas.
The insulation is one of the most important direct conservation activities under the LIFE+ project “The Return of the Neophron”.
