A coordination meeting for the conservation activities of the Egyptian Vulture in Bulgaria for this year was held on 04.03.2014 in Plovdiv. The meeting was hosted by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), with a strong participation of experts from Green Balkans (GB), Birds of Prey Protection Society (BPPS), Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna (FWFF), Sofia Zoo and the project New Thracian Gold (NTG). The participants exchanged topical information about the progress of the current projects, directly or indirectly related to the conservation of the vultures in the country. Also, they discussed the main problems and the opportunities for joint activities for greater efficiency and wider territorial coverage.

The main covered topics were the research work, the monitoring of breeding pairs, the study on the genetics of the Balkan population of the species, as well as collection of additional information for the ecology and the threats for the species. Special attention was paid to the possibilities of creating a population of birds in captivity and for providing birds. The organizations created an annual plan for joint activities, related to nests guarding and feeding of breeding pairs with safe food. A new feeding station in the Eastern Balkan Mountains will be built in 2014 through coordinated activities.

The meeting was useful and demonstrated the will of the conservation organizations working with scavenger birds to enhance their cooperation for coordinating the activities of the vulture conservation.

BSPB thanks to all participants and organizations for the useful discussions!
