Illegal use of poison baits seminar for Forestry Services in Ioannina, Greece

On the 21st of January, HOS carried out together with the Forestry Service on Ioannina, a seminar with the title “Poison baits in Greece: impacts and conflict solving”. The seminar was held at the Epirus Region Congress Centre in Ioannina and was addressed to all the Forestry Services of Ioannina. Nearly 50 civil servants from different departments attended the event.

Using the Egyptian vulture and the threats that endanger its survival as a starting point, the seminar addressed the complex issue of the illegal use of poison baits in the rural areas of Greece: beginning from the import and trade of illegal pesticides, the different types and methods used to place poison baits, to their impact on wildlife and society. Forestry agents were also given a set of guidelines to follow in the likely event of encountering poison baits or poisoned animals.

The audience was highly satisfied with the seminar and expressed their will to participate in further seminars on the matter in order to help in the eradication of this illegal practice from their region. The problem of the use of poison baits falls under the jurisdiction of the Forestry Services, and therefore their participation in this seminar, and in general their involvement and commitment with the issue, is of vital importance for the fight against poison.

This action is implemented under the framework of the LIFE project “The Return of the Neophron” campaign against the illegal use of poison baits, and will carry on with other public bodies in the region of Epirus.
