• BSPB train farmers how to apply for EU funding

BSPB is holding information meetings for farmers in the regions of Sliven and South-Eastern Bulgaria. Their aim is to advice local farmers on the opportunities to apply for EU funding under the new Agri-environment Measure 214 activities.

Meetings will be held in:

· Kurdzhali on 7th of February 2013, Thursday, at 14:30 h, in the "Business Incubator" at the Municipality;

· Krumovgrad on 7th of February 2013, Thursday, at 9:30 h, in the hall of the Municipal Children's Center;

· Svilengrad on 12th of February 2013, Tuesday, at 9.30 h in the premises of the Municipal Administration Svilengrad, boulevard "Bulgaria" № 32, 2nd floor, room № 2;

· Topolovgrad on 12th of February 2013, Tuesday at 14.30 h in the Business Center "Terziev house","Drama" Str., № 3;

· Elhovo on 13th of February 2013, Wednesday, at 14.30 h in the Library "Development", small hall;

· Sliven on 13th of February 2013, Wednesday, at 9.30 h in the Municipality of Sliven, hall "May", "Tsar Osvoboditel" Str. № 1.

The meetings are initiated by the BSPB due to the great interest of the local people and the many doubts and questions related to funding opportunities under the new agri-environment activities. The new Measure 214 "Agri-environment payments" of the Rural Development Programme (RDP) provides payments for development of sustainable and nature friendly farming in areas of the European Natura 2000 network. The purpose of the informational meetings with farmers is to present application requirements and different opportunities for the local farmers.

Measure 214 applies to farmers whose lands fall in areas with nests of the globally endangered species the Egyptian Vulture and the Eastern Imperial Eagle, as well as concentrations of the Red-breasted geese. To receive compensation for the first two species farmers should maintain their lands as pastures.

At the meetings are invited representatives of the regional directorates "Agriculture", Municipal Services "Agriculture", "Technical Inspection" of the Regional Inspection of the State Fund Agriculture in Yambol, Haskovo, Sliven, Kurdzhali and Krumovgrad. The meetings will end with Questions and Answers session and discussion about problems in applying agri-environmental payments.

These information meetings are directly related to the sustainable management of protected areas within the national Natura 2000 network: "Most Arda", "Madzharovo", "Yazovir Ivailovgrad", "Dobrostan", "Krumovitza", etc.

BSPB organizes these meetings with farmers within the frames of the LIFE+ project "The Return of the Neophron" funded by the EU and "A.G. Leventis" Foundation, in close collaboration with the GEF project "Ensuring sustainable management of Natura 2000 sites, key to the survival of globally threatened species" and the LIFE + project "Conservation of Imperial Eagle and Saker Falcon in key areas of the Natura 2000 network in Bulgaria'.'
