What happens to the small Egyptian Vultures?

17.08.2012

On August 9 our field assistant Stefan Rousinov alerted that one of the juvenile Egyptian Vultures in the Northeastern Bulgaria has fallen from its nest. The incident happened during his first attempt to fly. Stefan managed to find the bird under the rocks where the nest is located. However his joy was not long, because the small Egyptian vulture effortlessly managed to fly about a mile and hide from the sight of the guard in the forest.
It is a week-long saga of saving the small Egyptian Vulture, which involved staff and volunteers of the BSPB, the local scout club, the management of National park  "Shumen Highlands", RIEW Shumen, representatives of local authorities, hunters and local habitants. So, after considerable effort, the bird was found healthy and unharmed. He is very energetic and feisty bird - qualities that surely helped him to survive in the forest. The BSPB experts found that the vulture was fed by parents. Once we found it, we got him back in his nest where under parental supervision and it may make another attempt to fly.
This wonderful story is not the only good news we have to share. The small Egyptian Vulture Volen that you are watching on the online camera on our web site made a successful first flight. Volen is one of juveniles that we marked this year with satellite transmitters. He is visibly stronger and bigger than his "little brother".
We wish to the both juveniles  "flawless" flights to distant countries.
