Supplementary feeding of Egyptian Vulture nest

06.08.2012

Twice a week we place a small amount of food about 2-2.5kg near an Egyptian vulture nest in Koilada Filiouri area in Thrace. The food is placed at daybreak and then during the whole day we are watching the response of the couple. The feeding was started after the period of hatching and continues to this day. The pair has responded and consumes the food, while it carries part of the food in the nest where it feeds the chick. This action aims to positively influence the reproductive success of the pair and secure safe food consumption by reducing the possibilities of dangerous food (ie poisoned). Both in Greece and Bulgaria, the action takes place in vulture nests not adjacent with feeding stations, as is the National Park of Dadia forest where there is a feeding station that can support with supplementary food the pairs of the National Park. The same nest is guarded for 20-22 days a month from the morning till the evening under the action of the LIFE program to guarding of the nests of vulture.

Our guard monitors the nest (WWF/E. Kret)
