Today BSPB officially launched the international project Urgent Measures to Secure the Survival of the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) in Bulgaria and Greece. Among the guests at the event were Dr. Todor Chobanov, deputy mayor of Sofia Municipality, and Mr. Boris Hadjiev, representative of A. G. Leventis Foundation in Bulgaria. The guests wished the project team success and expressed their support for the mission of BSPB, as well as their hope for future cooperation in the field of nature conservation.
During the event we presented our team as well as the urgent actions for the species conservation that are to be carried out in the next five years mainly on the Balkans, with a few operations in countries in Africa and Asia. The exhibition The Return of the Neophron in the rooms of the museum illustrates the efforts for the conservation of the species which is the symbol of BSPB. The panels consist of photographs and information and will stay in the museum until the end of February.
The international project The Return of the Neophron is funded by the LIFE+ Programme of the EU and the A. G. Leventis Foundation. It includes It includes 27 target Natura 2000 sites (12 in Bulgaria and 15 in Greece) and is the result of the combined effort of 4 partners from 3 countries to protect the last remaining Egyptian vultures on the Balkan Peninsula.
