- Egyptian vulture migration has started!
Berenice woke up on the 30th of August and decided that the time had come to "leave the nest". The waypoints we had received the previous days from her satellite transmitter already indicated signs of restlessness. So last Friday she made up her mind and started the long and perilous trip that will take her from Meteora, Greece, all the way south of the Sahara to what will be her new home for the next 3-4 years. Egyptian vultures from the Balkans usually winter in the wider area of Chad and Sudan, so we expect Berenice to head there too, although she might surprise us as Svetlina did last year by staying somewhere such as Yemen!
For now, she has travelled south to the Attica region where she's trying to decide which route to take. Let's hope she doesn't follow the example of her brother Ikaros who tried to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Crete but sadly drowned before reaching the coast of Lybia.
Berenice was tagged by the Hellenic Ornithological Society team this past July and is the first juvenile of the 10 that were tagged this year in the framework of the LIFE project "The Return of the Neophron" to start migrating. So let's wish her all the luck she can get for she will surely need it to travel more than 3.000 km that separate her from her final destination in Africa!
