A meeting between representatives of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and the Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna was held at the beginning of July in the picturesque Rakitna Village, southwestern Bulgaria, to discuss cooperation in the LIFE+ projects "The Return of the Neophron" (LIFE10 NAT/BG/000152) and "Life for Kresna Gorge" (LIFE11 NAT/BG/000363). The subject of the meeting was the future of the globally endangered Egyptian vulture in the country. Earlier in 2013 the two organizations signed a framework agreement for cooperation, which declared their intentions to join forces for protection of the precious for the Bulgarian nature species in situ and ex situ.
Through its activities on site, FWFF managed to make the Griffon, Egyptian and Black Vulture soar again over Kresna Gorge. The work program of the coordinated by FWFF LIFE + project "Life for Kresna Gorge" is planning construction of aviaries for Egyptian vultures and captive breeding. BSPB will support FWFF with the results of the research activities, carried out within the LIFE + project "The Return of the Neophron" (namely genetic research, tracking of migration and dispersion of juveniles and annual monitoring of breeding pairs). Thus they will be able to make timely and effective decisions, necessary for the sustainability of the species in southwestern Bulgaria and other parts of the country.
