The team shout “Save the Egyptian vulture” (WWF Greece)

On that Wednesday (12/6/2013) the Egyptian vulture flew to Tichero! No person, no stand at the open market, no retail shop was left that didn't meet this endangered species. The 17 messengers from the 6th grade of the town's primary school, that has adopted the Egyptian vulture pair that nests on the rocks of Gerakina in the Forest of Dadia, with the information brochures in their hands and the storm in their back, delivered in the entire town the message in favour of the protection of the small vulture. At the same time the rest of the class, with the assistance of the school's art teacher, painted a big banner with Ermis and Hera (the pair's names that they chose) and the message "Save the Egyptian vulture". Minutes before the storm broke, the team hanged the banner on a central wall of the school, visible to all, to remind them that the area is home also of unique birds and thus every activity needs to be done with great care and caution.
The nest on the rocks of Gerakina is one of the oldest nest of the species in Thrace. Even more, together with three more pairs that nest in the core of the National Park of Dadia, it forms the bigger Egyptian vulture "district" in Greece. A fact that increases the need for protecting the area.
The adoption team visited the area. A good opportunity to meet up close Ermis and Hera, to gain a good understanding of the qualities of the places where the species choose to breed and at the same time admire the "trademark" of Dadia's Forest, the black vulture.
The relationship of the team with Ermis and Hera has started. The team is on the ready to embrace protectively the two birds that live in their neighbourhood. Until then the message "Save the Egyptian vulture" will be there to remind the town of the important role it has to play in the struggle to prevent the extinction of this unique vulture.
