Eleyeh Omar, one of the participants in the BSPB training seminar in Ethiopia held in January this year for research and conservation of Egyptian vultures, had the opportunity to demonstrate the gain experience. His team from Nature Djibouti (the BirdLife parter for Djibouti) made an interesting observation of migration of adult Egyptian vultures in high numbers (ca. 1200 ind.) through Bab el Mandeb, Djibouti this April. Helped by Dr. Mike McGrady, the team managed to capture one of the birds. The vulture was named Assamo and was fitted with satellite transmitter and Bulgarian ornithological ring. Collecting information about the movements and main threats of this globally threatened specis is the main aim of the marking. More information about Assamo and its movements is available here.
Building a network from experts working with the Egyptian vulture along its flyways is a milestone for the conservation of the species. The BSPB and its partners are intensively working on this key issue in the frames of the LIFE+ project „The Return of the Neophron“, funded by the European Union and the „A. G. Leventis“ oundation.
