Egyptian vultures can enjoy safe-food at their “vulture restaurant” in Meteora

Since the beginning of April a "vulture restaurant" is fully operating in the area of Meteora. Meat from the local slaughterhouse is disposed weekly with the collaboration of the local Forestry Service and the Hellenic Ornithological Society. This feeding site has already proved to be working successfully as the Egyptian vultures visited the restaurant from the very first day.

Until now, the maximum number of Egyptian Vultures recorded feeding simultaneously is three, almost half the population of the species at the area. In addition, eight different bird species have been recorded using the "restaurant" with an adult Lesser Spotted Eagle being the most regular visitor. Since the observation point from where the monitoring is carried out is located on the main road, many people have stopped and been informed about the species and the LIFE+ project actions, and some lucky ones even had the chance to enjoy the sight of the vultures feeding.

The feeding site will carry on operating until the end of the season when the birds start their migration to Africa. Until then, it will provide them with safe, free of poison, and always available food.  We look forward to see more vultures enjoying their private and safe "restaurant" in Meteora!
