On 11-12 May we will celebrate the World Migratory Bird Day. Launched in 2006 – World Migratory Bird Day is an annually raising campaign aiming to inspire the worldwide conservation of both migratory birds and their environments. The campaign is organized by two international wildlife treaties administrated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS)q and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA). World Migratory Bird Day is also supported by a growing number of partners.
The survival of the migratory birds depends on the availability of well-connected networks of habitats along their migration routes. The theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day “Networking for migratory birds” aims to emphasize both ecological networks, as well as networks between organizations and individuals and their mutual importance for the long-term conservation of migratory birds.
The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds within the project LIFE+ “The Return of the Neophron” commemorates the Day by organizing interesting events in different project sites in Bulgaria where the Egyptian Vultures still can be seen.
From 7 to 11 May the nature conservation camp Kartali will be held on Studen Kladenetz dam. The participants are young people dedicated to nature conservation, mainly students and lecturers from the LIFE+ projects. Presentations will be given on the research and conservation of the globally threatened migratory species in Bulgaria (e.g. the Egyptian vulture, Red Breasted Goose, Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, etc.). Figure of Egyptian vulture from diverse available materials will be made by the participants in the workshop on the 11 May.
In Provadia, a sculpture will be made by pupils of 5 different local schools. The event will be held on 11 May from 10 o’clock on the square in front of the municipality. The travelling exhibition “The Return of the Neophron” will be presented from 10 to 17 May in the Professional High School of Agriculture.
In Ruse, during the holiday of the town, the BSPB team of the project LIFE+ "The Return of the Neophron" in collaboration with the Municipality of Ruse, created installation in praise of the Egyptian vulture. In the construction of the installation participated people of different ages, but the most active were kids.
The installation was built by silhouettes of Egyptian vultures that each participant had to decorate by a technique called "decopatch" and personally attached to the big contruction.
These workshops and the creative process we are involving the publics stimulates curiosity about the species - why we have chosen the Egyptian vulture, why is he so extraordinary, how to help him? The events show the possibility to start dialogue with the local communities by means of art. Such artistic performances could be used as a catalyst of causing changes at the local or even national level.
