Title: Head on encounter with a vanishing icon Story: In 2014, while on a trip to Meteora - the stronghold of Central Greece's Egyptian Vultures - I visited one of the last nesting sites in the area. My first feeling of disappointment (as no birds were seen at or close to the nest) gave quickly way to sheer excitement as one of the birds returned to the site and circled around for several times at a very close distance. I was not close to the nest so the bird approached me not because it was disturbed; it was plain curiosity the motivation, I am pretty sure about that! Five minutes later, the bird lost interest and dissapeared in the bright sky. That was my closest view of this magnificent bird... © Lefteris Stavrakas

A garbage dumping site on the outskirt of Pokhara, Nepal, is the stronghold of Egyptian Vultures. It is sad and alarming to see these majestic birds come to feed on refuse of our civilization and their feathers are badly stained by waste. They are exposed to the risk of consuming toxic food, which could be deadly. This is how the species is surviving in the world where their original habitat is quickly vanishing. © Khemthong Tonsakulrungruang, Thailand
