Mapping of electricity pylons in Meteora

Electricity pylon in Antichasia (HOS/V. Saravia)

During December, HOS field team completed the mapping of potentially dangerous electricity poles within the Special Protection Area of Meteora-Antichasia, in Central Greece. This area is one the last strongholds of the species in the country with four active territories. Over 1500 pylons were mapped covering more than 130 km of overhead medium voltage power lines. Although no signs of recently electrocuted birds were found, a large percent of the recorded pylons were classified as "dangerous" according to the level of risk of electrocution they pose to birds. A full assessment of pylons needing insulation will be carried out in 2013 once the mapping of all active territories in Greece is completed.
