- BSPB takes part in an Egyptian vulture food collection expedition in Greece

A BSPB team was invited by WWF-Greece to take part in an expedition for the collection and examination of Egyptian vulture food remains in the Greek part of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains, 20-23 October. Food remains were collected at five nests of the species; they will be analyzed by experts from the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia, and from BSPB.
In Greece the Egyptian vulture is in a worse state than in Bulgaria. Its negative tendency there is steeper and at present the population is probably under 30 pairs. The most serious threat for the species probably comes from the illegal use of poisons against land predators which is much more common in Greece than in Bulgaria. Also, electricity poles with a design dangerous for large birds are much more wide-spread in Greece.
Preliminary results from the examination of food remains from nearly 70 Egyptian vulture nests in Bulgaria can be found on our website.
We would like to express our gratitude to our colleagues from WWF-Greece for the invitation and the warm welcome.
